As Egypt's Morsi takes symbolic oath, many fear 'Islamization'

Amr Nabil / AP

Egypt's President-elect Mohammed Morsi waves to supporters at Tahrir Square, the focal point of Egyptian uprising, in Cairo on Friday, June 29, 2012.

By Charlene Gubash, NBC News Cairo

Today my best and oldest friend in Egypt told me she is going abroad to prepare paperwork in the event she decides to leave her country. It's very painful to even write that sentence and even harder to reread it. My friend is Egyptian, a devout Muslim, a patriot and yet she is preparing a plan B of escape, as so many others here have done, because she fears Egypt is turning into another Iran.

Post-revolution Egyptians to US: Stay out

Among her concerns, she mentions female self-appointed moral police, veiled from head to toe, admonishing other women that they will go to hell unless they dress conservatively. I arrived in Egypt a long time ago. To give you an idea just how long ago, NBC used an old telex machine and an even older poorly functioning landline to communicate abroad. My friend helped me master the essential skill of typing my message on a thin paper strip that I would then re-feed through the machine. Suffice to say, she was the most patient of teachers.

One of the most impressive sights to me at the time was seeing unveiled and veiled women walking down the street together, arm in arm, no judgment and no pressure to dress a certain way. In those days, most women were unveiled. As a foreigner, I always felt welcomed and only distinguished as an American by the fact that almost every cab driver would give me the thumbs up sign, upon learning my nationality, and say cheerfully, "America, number one!"?

But Egypt is changing. Today, Egypt's President-elect Mohammed Morsi punctuated his first speech to the nation with a promise to work for the release of convicted terrorist, Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman. Morsi addressed tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood and Salafist followers in Tahrir Square, taking an unofficial oath of office before the people who put him there. He described it as the real oath rather than the oath that he will take tomorrow before the general assembly of the Constitutional Court, rejecting the legal decision that dismantled an illegitimately constituted parliament and rejecting the military's additions to the constitution that would prevent him from controlling the military.

Egypt elections only the beginning of a transitional process

Morsi underlined several times that the people were the source of power and decision-making, not the institutions. Despite the fact that he initially addressed all Egyptians, Muslim and Christian, men and women, and all countries in the free world, Muslim and non-Muslim, his message was in fact directed to the hardcore constituency in front of him, fervent Islamists who would eventually like to see Egypt become an Islamic state governed by Islamic religious law.?

Although President-elect Morsi repeated a message of love for all Egyptians, the vast majority of Egyptians have little in common with the Islamists who now crowd Tahrir Square.?

"He handed power to the mob," lamented a Coptic Christian viewer on a talk show following the speech.

Egypt has elected a conservative president who has said he wants to impose Islamic law. How he will change the country remains unclear. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Many felt it was improper to take the oath of office in Tahrir Square rather than before the Constitutional Court. "It's basically very amateurish," said Hisham Kassem, veteran publisher. "He made lots of mistakes to the point you think he's going to be a trial-and-error president... making a promise to hand over Omar Abdul Rahman, the first man to attack the World Trade Center. He will never be released. He is just going to annoy the Americans now," Kassem said.

"[Taking the oath of office in Tahrir] eroded his legitimacy. If he is banking on the street, it's not very savvy, his presidency will collapse in a year if he banks on that," Kassem added.

Analysis: Egypt's big turn under the Muslim Brotherhood

Morsi's impassioned speech is more likely to add to the atmosphere of uncertainty rather than quell it. By telling the crowded square that they were the source of power, Morsi thumbed his nose at the military generals who are trying to deny him control over the Ministry of Defense and the judiciary that has dissolved the parliament due to party members competing for independent seats.??

Most Egyptians just want to get the country -- which many say is close to the brink of economic collapse -- back on track. They would rather hear about plans for restoring tourism, creating jobs and ending bottled gas and gasoline shortages than stoking anger against the military. Most would rather see Tahrir Square become a main thoroughfare, open to traffic. Instead, Morsi has further empowered the party faithful who are camped out there.?

During the past week, the president-elect has reached out to those who are most apprehensive of a Muslim Brotherhood president, Egypt's eight million Coptic Christians, by meeting with their religious leaders.

"We are worried about the Islamization of Egyptian society," said Father Fafic Greiche, a church spokesman, in an interview with Vatican Radio. He also met with opposition parties and youth groups to discuss forming a new government that people hope will be representative of Egypt's women and secular and socially progressive groups.?

The Muslim Brotherhood party also went on the offensive to stem fears women have about the rise to power of an Islamist. A party spokesman posted a message on the official website blaming other parties for a deliberate smear campaign by linking "individuals attacking women or girls or women's hairdressers claiming to be religious police" to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Female Member of Parliament Azza al Garf condemned the severe sexual attack on a British journalism student in Tahrir Square on the day Morsi was declared president and demanded perpetrators be brought to justice. Ironically, Al Garf herself has been sued by a women's rights non-governmental organization for wanting to reverse Egyptian laws that criminalize sexual harassment and female genital mutilation.?

Google sends Chromebooks to some Best Buy and Dixons stores

Google is getting serious about spreading the reach of Chromebooks. At its day two I/O keynote, it just revealed that the Chrome OS laptops are in 100 Best Buy retail stores across the US, effective today. British stores are getting a similar amount of care with a Chromebook presence in Dixons stores throughout the UK. We're still waiting on more details, such as which models will grace shelves, but there's good reason to suspect that Samsung's Series 5 550 will be front and center. If you haven't had the chance to make it out to a library or a cross-country flight to try a Chromebook for yourself, all you'll have to do now is swing by the local electronics shop to give that cloud computer a real shakedown.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's developer conference at our event hub!

UTC exported software used in Chinese helicopter

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A division of United Technologies Corp. pleaded guilty on Thursday to crimes related to the illegal export of software that U.S. officials say was used by China to develop the country's first modern military attack helicopter.

The subsidiary, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp.; Hartford-based UTC; and another subsidiary along with UTC agreed to pay more than $75 million in fines in connection with the export violations and for providing misleading information to the U.S. government.

The U.S. attorney for Connecticut, David Fein, said Pratt & Whitney Canada knowingly committed the violations because it wanted to become the exclusive supplier for a helicopter market in China with projected revenues of up to $2 billion.

"PWC exported controlled U.S. technology to China, knowing it would be used in the development of a military attack helicopter in violation of the U.S. arms embargo with China," Fein said.

The prosecution is one of the largest resolutions of export violations with a major defense contractor in the Justice Department's history, Fein said at a news conference after the court hearing. Authorities said the case sends a clear message that willful violators of U.S. arms control export regulations will be punished.

"As today's case demonstrates, the Justice Department will spare no effort to hold accountable those who compromise U.S. national security for the sake of profits and then lie about it to the government," Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco said.

UTC said it has taken substantial action to ensure the violations won't happen again.

"Export controls are an integral part of safeguarding U.S. national security and foreign policy interests," UTC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Louis Chenevert said in a statement. "As a supplier of controlled products and technologies to the Department of Defense and other domestic and international customers, we are committed to conducting business in full compliance with all export laws and regulations. We accept responsibility for these past violations and we deeply regret they occurred."

The United States has barred the export of defense articles to China since 1989.

Beginning in the 1990s, China sought to develop its attack helicopter under the guise of a civilian program to secure Western assistance, according to U.S. authorities. Pratt & Whitney Canada delivered development engines to China for what become the Z-10, China's first military attack helicopter, in 2001 and 2002 after determining on its own that the engines did not require an export license because they were identical to engines already supplied to China for a commercial helicopter, officials said.

U.S. authorities say the electronic engine control software, however, required a U.S. export license because it was modified for a military helicopter application. Authorities say the Canadian subsidiary had six versions of the military software, made by UTC subsidiary Hamilton Sundstrand, sent to China in 2002 and 2003.

Pratt & Whitney Canada pleaded guilty to violating the Arms Export Control Act and making false statements in connection with the illegal export of software.

The fine to be paid by UTC, Pratt & Whitney Canada and Hamilton Sundstrand is part of a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. State Department. As much as $20 million can be suspended if UTC applies to remedial compliance efforts.

UTC also was charged with making false statements to the government related to belated disclosures of the illegal exports, but authorities agreed not to prosecute that charge provided the company complies with an agreement that includes an independent monitor who will assess the company's compliance with export laws for the next two years.

United Technologies also settled 576 civil charges with the State Department, including more than 800 exports in violation of the Arms Export Control Act from the mid-1990s to last year, officials said.

Justin Bieber Comparisons Are 'Flattering,' Austin Mahone Says

Many call Texan teen, who built up fanbase on social media, the next Bieber.
By Tami Katzoff

What do you call a group of kids who are so fiercely loyal to their young pop idol that they buy up all available tickets to a show in minutes, journey from far-off locales and park themselves on a sidewalk for hours just so they can get a glimpse of their beloved teenage Texan? Are they Beliebers? Of course not — Justin Bieber is Canadian, not Texan. They're Mahomies.

Mahomies are fans of 16-year-old Austin Mahone, the boy many believe will be crowned the Next Justin. The similarities are there: Both are fresh-faced, drum-playing crooners who built their massive fandom using social media and YouTube. And both are followed everywhere by throngs of screaming girls.

But Austin Mahone does something that most fledgling pop stars don't: When his fans reach out to him, he reaches back. He follows them on Twitter. He keeps them updated on his comings and goings through video posts and Instagrams. He even Skypes with fans, one-on-one (for a fee). "Individually, they all give something to support me, which got me to where I am right now," Mahone told MTV News. "I just want to give back to them as much as I can and say thank you."

Mahone has no debut album yet and, as of press time, no label on which to release one. He does have two singles, "11:11" and "Say Somethin," which can be purchased on iTunes. He also has more than 777,000 Twitter followers and nearly half a million Facebook fans. Nicolette Valenti, 14, flew to New York from Boca Raton, Florida, to see Austin's sold-out show at Best Buy Theater on Friday; she said she would do anything to be around him. "Some girls just like him because he's cute," Valenti explained. "But I think he's really talented."

Mahone's journey to stardom began two years ago, when he started making videos with his friend Alex Constancio and posting them on YouTube. Then he started doing covers of artists like Bruno Mars, Adele and yes, Justin Bieber. His online fame steadily grew; he began making personal appearances and doing live shows. He's since relocated from Texas to Miami to work on new music.

"Coming from my bedroom in San Antonio to this big world and going from singing covers off my laptop to making music in this nice studio, making professional-sounding music — it's just weird," Mahone said. "It's crazy. I can't believe that happened."

The inevitable comparisons to Mr. Bieber don't seem to bother him too much. "I mean, it's flattering. It's not that bad of a thing," he said. "It's cool because he's such an inspiration to me and he's so successful, and I just hope that I'll be as successful as him someday." The comparisons do, however, bother many Mahomies.

"People say that Austin is the new Justin Bieber — I don't think that at all," said 14-year-old Maggie Benzenhafer as she waited on the sidewalk outside the Best Buy Theater. "I think Austin's going to be the new Austin Mahone."

Catholic Church's role in society at heart of HHS debate, says ...

By Julie Asher

INDIANAPOLIS (CNS) ? The debate over the federal contraceptive mandate and the fight for religious freedom is not about ?a particular policy choice? but is ?a debate over the role of religion in American society and the freedom and integrity of the Catholic Church?s mission,? the head of the Knights of Columbus said June 22.

?It?s not an ordinary national debate. There?s a great deal at stake here,? Supreme Knight Carl Anderson told Catholic News Service in an interview in Indianapolis. It is an attempt ?to redefine the role of religion in America,? he added.

Anderson was at the Catholic Media Conference, the annual joint convention of the Catholic Press Association and the Catholic Academy for Communications Arts Professionals. He was scheduled to address the closing banquet of the June 20-22 media gathering.

The mandate issued by the Department of Health and Human Services would require most religious employers to provide contraceptives and sterilization free of charge to their employees.

To be exempt, a religious organization must have ?the inculcation of religious values as its purpose?; primarily employ ?persons who share its religious tenets?; primarily serve ?persons who share its religious tenets?; and be a nonprofit organization under specific sections of the Internal Revenue Code.

Catholics are at the center of the HHS debate right now, he said, but it began with the Lutherans in the Supreme Court case in Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC, a challenge to a Lutheran school?s firing of a teacher. The attempt to more narrowly define who is a religious employee was unanimously rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Anderson said ?virtually every religious denomination? in the U.S. ? ?from the Hare Krishnas to the Catholic Church? ? got involved in the case because the position taken by the Obama administration on Hosanna-Tabor, he said, could be characterized as the government?s most restrictive definition of religious ministry.

Chief Justice John Roberts said ?not even the pope would qualify for this,? Anderson noted.

?In many ways that view of religion is continued in the HHS mandate, in the sense that once again the administration is taking a very restrictive, very narrow definition of religious institutions,? he told CNS.

?Some say what kind of Christian would impose that kind of restriction on religion in America? I don?t think that?s the proper question,? Anderson said, referring to remarks made about President Barack Obama?s religious faith. ?I don?t think we ought to be in the business of judging people about the sincerity of their faith.

?So it?s not that question,? he continued. ?But I think it is a legitimate question to say why is this definition so narrow, and why are we looking to push religion further and further outside the public square. I think this is what this debate is about.?

According to a Knights of Columbus-Marist Poll conducted in May, nearly three in four Americans ? 74 percent to 26 percent ? said freedom of religion should be protected, even if it conflicts with other laws. Majorities also would protect the First Amendment conscience rights of hospitals, health care workers and insurers.

The poll found that 50 percent of Americans have heard of the debate over the federal contraceptive mandate. Overall, the poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Anderson told CNS he hopes the June 21-July 4 ?fortnight for freedom? will raise the consciousness of Catholics ?as to the importance of free exercise of religion and the historic role of the Catholic community in America.?

Pointing to the ?tremendous contribution? of Catholic schools, charities, and hospitals and other health care facilities to U.S. society, he said the two-week observance is not just about freedom of worship but ?the free exercise of a faith-based charity ? which is one of the things I think differentiates American society from other countries.?

The ?personal dimension of Christian charity is so important,? because it creates ?a solidarity which really is foundational to a humane society? and can ?really transform culture,? Anderson said, but he added that Catholics don?t ?realize well enough ? the potential power we have through charity to change the culture.?

Responding to claims the fortnight is politically motivated, he said it is not a partisan effort and neither is there ?any news? in the fact the Knights of Columbus is supporting the effort financially, he said.

?It should not come as a surprise to people that the Knights support the bishops? mission on religious freedom,? he explained. ?We support the bishops? conference ? local bishops ? local pastors in a lot of ways. So the fact that once again the Knights of Columbus are stepping up to help the bishops on a project to me it?s not very newsworthy, frankly.?

Asked about the new movie ?For Greater Glory,? about the Cristero Rebellion in Mexico in the 1920s, Anderson said the story resonates with the Knights, because a number of the martyrs of the war were Knights.

He does see one fundamental parallel between the situation in Mexico at that time and the current fight in the U.S. over the HHS mandate and religious freedom.

Both governments made ?a serious effort to limit the role of the Catholic Church, ?he said. ?Catholics were right in Mexico to attempt peaceful means to resist that, and I think Catholics are right today to use the means at our disposal ? the courts, comments, legislation. ?. I wouldn?t draw any more parallels beyond that.?

After a period of peaceful resistance, the brutality of Mexico?s dictator, Plutarco Elias Calles, ultimately led Catholic clergy and laity to take up arms.

?It?s obvious we?re not in a situation like that,? Anderson said. ?Trying to read more into it I think is unjustified.?

Sun Exposure and Cutaneous HPV Infection Found Synergistic in Skin

? Skin Cancer news ? Jun 25, 2012

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg have found that having antibodies for cutaneous types of human papillomavirus (HPV), coupled with sun exposure (ultraviolet radiation) or poor tanning ability, can act ?synergistically? in the development of non-melanoma skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

A number of studies into the relationship between cutaneous HPV and sun exposure have been conducted previously but with mixed results, the researchers said.

This study, the first to investigate interaction effects between genus-specific cutaneous HPV positivity and multiple measures of sunlight exposure as related to BCC and SCC in a U.S. population, was published in a recent issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

?UV radiation exposure is the most important risk factor for the development of non-melanoma skins cancer,? said study lead author Dana E. Rollison, Ph.D., Moffitt associate member, vice president and chief health information officer. ?Cases of non-melanoma skin cancers are increasing despite the increased use of sunscreen products. Thus, so that new interventions can be developed, there is a need to identify co-factors that may interact with UV radiation exposure in increasing the skin cancer risk.?

According to the authors, the risk factors for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are male sex; age; light skin, eyes and hair; and UV radiation exposure.

UV radiation exposure and light skin pigmentation are the most recognized risk factors. People with low melanin production tend to have difficulty tanning when exposed to UV radiation.

Skin pigmentation, created by chemical melanin production in the skin, is the ?main photoprotective mechanism in the skin,? noted the researchers.

The researchers hypothesized that persistent HPV infection may promote tumor progression by interfering with an individual?s response to UV radiation-induced DNA damage and that HPV plays a synergistic role in the development of BCC and SCC.? Accordingly, their goal was to investigate the potential ?modifying effects of cutaneous HPV seroreactivity on the associations between sunlight exposure, host susceptibility to UV radiation exposure, and both BCC and SCC.?

The study recruited 204 patient volunteers with BCC, 156 with SCC, and 297 controls with no reported cancer types. The three groups were surveyed on demographics, personal constitutional characteristics, lifestyle factors and measurements of sunlight exposure. Each volunteer provided a blood sample for cutaneous HPV antibody measurement.

?Sun-related factors were associated with BCC and SCC,? Rollison said. ?Cutaneous sensitivity to sunlight exposure - specifically experiencing a blistering sunburn - and poor tanning ability were associated with a higher prevalence of antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genus beta. The associations between poor tanning ability and SCC were significantly greater among those positive for antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genera alpha and beta.?

Additional studies are needed, including those measuring infection with cutaneous HPV types in multiple genera, concluded the researchers.

?Identifying how HPV infections might influence sunlight-associated risks of NMSC may lead to improved identification of high-risk individuals and also aid in the development of new prevention strategies,? Rollison said.

Their research was supported by a grant from Florida?s James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program (06NIR-08).

Workers search for victims of Canada roof collapse

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario (AP) ? Workers labored into the night to enable a search for victims after at least one person was feared dead and another trapped inside the rubble when a roof collapsed at a mall in northern Ontario, authorities said.

Workers were unable to reach anyone Sunday because the structure was too unstable. They said it would take until early Monday morning before the area was deemed safe enough for rescue teams to go back in. Images taken with a camera show a hand and foot in the dusty debris, said Ontario Provincial Police Insp. Percy Jollymore.

Fire officials heard tapping Sunday morning in another part of the rubble, but nothing had been heard for hours. They said they also tried to reach that person by drilling through a wall, but found the structure too unsafe to risk entering far enough inside.

"Some of our search members this morning heard a couple of taps," said Bill Needles, a spokesman from the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team which travelled from Toronto. "They called for a quick silence on the site and there was a couple more taps. That was an indication to us that we were dealing with a rescue."

He said the operation was still a rescue mission and they were still hoping to find people alive.

Police compiled a list of nine people missing since the collapse Saturday, but the names were being crossed off as members of the community accounted for their loved ones.

At least 22 people suffered minor injuries in the roof collapse Saturday afternoon at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake.

A special emergency crew was working to stabilize the scene, but authorities said the process could take another 12 hours.

A portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled down two floors into an area near the food court, leaving behind a gaping hole which was 12 meters (39 feet) by 24 meters (79 feet). It also downed hydro lines and triggered a gas leak.

Emergency officials quickly cleared out the mall and closed surrounding roads. Mayor Rick Hamilton declared a state of emergency.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said he was in touch with Elliot Lake's mayor and thanked emergency crews in the city for their efforts.

"As we anxiously wait to learn more about anyone thought to be missing in Elliot Lake, our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and also with those who have been injured and indeed with the entire community," McGuinty said in a statement.

Hope mingled with frustration in the close-knit community as residents waited for news.

"There's a fair amount missing," said Heather Richer, who owns a restaurant in the mall and was at work when the collapse took place. "I'm hoping everyone's found, but I'm giving up hope on whether they're going to find them alive."

Richer, who was particularly concerned about an acquaintance who was unaccounted for, described Saturday's thunderous collapse as a nightmare.

"It was almost like a little mini earthquake, like a big bang, and then gone," she said. "There was nothing there. Everything started to cave in, water was pouring out of the pipes."

Joe Drazil, a Zellers store employee, said several cars appeared to have fallen through the gaping hole near some escalators.

"You can see the roof with the cars hanging inside," he said. "Everybody was cleared from the whole mall. After that, there was numerous police and emergency vehicles coming from all over."

Shopper Jean-Marc Hayward was having coffee when the roof collapsed about 20 feet (6 meters) from him. He said a big hunk of concrete tumbled down through two floors and that it sounded like an explosion. "It was a big loud crash. It didn't just go down one floor it went down two floors," he said.

Hayward said a lottery terminal kiosk was located directly under the roof that caved in.

Hayward said he saw one man with a bloody face. A dwarf who has trouble with his legs, Hayward said he couldn't run out. "I was sucking in dust," he said.

Hayward and others have said the mall roof has leaked water for some time. There have long been buckets and tarps around the mall to collect leaking water, Hayward said.

"It's obvious there has been a lot of damage in the structure because of the water," Hayward said. "A couple of years ago they said they fixed all the leaks in the mall, but they didn't. You could tell every time it rained."

Stephan Powell of Toronto Fire Services could not confirm if rescue officials had been briefed about the water leaking issue.

Levon Nazarin, the mall's owner, choked back tears as he read a statement to community members on Sunday.

"To those who have been injured and to those families with missing individuals we offer our deepest sympathies," he said.

Community members expressed anger to town officials for not doing something about the constant leaks.

The two-level mall in this northern Ontario community is approximately 200,000 square feet (18,580 sq. meters). It houses a grocery store, restaurants, a number of retail outlets, a hotel, and the constituency office for a member of the provincial parliament.

Rhonda Bear, a spokeswoman for the mall, which is run by Eastwood Mall Incorporated, referred all questions on the collapse and the condition of the mall to its lawyer, who could not immediately be reached for comment.

"All our concern right now is our prayers are with the families," Bear said.

One-Hit Wonder: A Look at the Physics behind Dickey's Knuckleball

Source: flickr/cmaybourne

R. A. Dickey is one of the hottest topics in Major League Baseball right now. This right-handed Mets pitcher?s two most recent outings have been one-hitters, he has a league-leading 11?1 win-loss record, and he?s one of the league?s only knuckleballers. What makes this pitch so hard to hit?

A knuckleball is famously difficult to throw, hit and catch because of its erratic behavior. It seems to fly through the air with no spin and then break suddenly in any direction. The ball?s seams are key to this behavior. Not just tools to keep the leather together or leave impressive welts when you ?catch? a ball with your shin, the seams affect the airflow around the ball.

Air drags along the smooth parts of a baseball surface, but the seams produce little vortices that allow air to travel more quickly over them. A fastball rotates 16 or 17 times between the pitcher and batter, and the rapid rotation means that the airflow turbulence caused by the seams is pretty evenly spread over the whole ball and the entire trajectory of the throw, so it travels steadily. On the other hand, a knuckleball rotates only one half to one time on its way to the batter, so the airflow turbulence stays on one side of the ball for a while before slowly moving to the other. The ball drifts in the direction of the leading seam, which slowly moves from one side to the other.

Slow is, of course, relative when it comes to pitching. Most knuckleballs poke along at a zesty 65 to 70 miles per hour, although Dickey?s have averaged 77 mph this season. By comparison, fastballs in the majors average about 90 mph. Dickey?s speed may be part of the secret to his success, especially when it comes to his unusually high strikeout percentage. Higher speeds mean less erratic movement, which helps him stay in the strike zone. Of course, it?s a balancing act because the erratic movement is what makes the knuckleball so hard to hit in the first place.

Whatever his secret, Dickey is flying high right now, along with his knuckleball. He?s won the last six games he?s pitched. Tonight we?ll see if he can make it seven.

Consumers who are less knowledgeable about a product typically make choices based on differences that are easy to compare among the available options, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"Companies expend a lot of resources on research and development to introduce new and unique features, without recognizing that many of their customers have a preference for better rather than different features," write authors Myungwoo Nam (INSEAD, Singapore), Jing Wang (University of Iowa), and Angela Y. Lee (Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University).

In studies involving electronic products such as cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, and laptops, the authors showed that expertise influences whether consumers choose products based on differences in standard features versus unique or extra features that are not shared by other brands. Consumers with little product knowledge made choices based on basic features that could be easily compared among brands. "Whereas novices rely more on standard features in making decisions, experts are more likely to use unique attributes instead," write the authors.

This leads the authors to suggest that companies should distinguish between expert and novice consumers. For example, in the point and shoot digital camera market, where most consumers are novices, companies may be better off competing on having a higher number of pixels because the number of pixels can easily be compared across different brands. However, in the digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) market, consumers are more sophisticated and are likely to recognize that the number of pixels is just one of many factors affecting picture quality. Therefore, companies competing in the DSLR market should try to develop other unique attributes that cannot be directly compared with other brands.

"When companies are targeting experts, their strategy should focus more on developing products with unique attributes; and when companies are targeting consumers with little product knowledge, they should improve existing features and highlight their superior performance," the authors conclude.

(AP) ? America will get to hear from its newest "American Idol" Phillip Phillips as he makes a comeback performance following kidney surgery at this year's July Fourth celebration on the National Mall.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press ahead of Monday's announcement, the 21-year-old from Leesburg, Ga., said he's ready to perform after focusing on recovering from a serious kidney surgery since the "Idol" finale in May.

"I'm getting better each day, so that's a good thing. I'm just walking around, getting my strength back together," he said by phone from Los Angeles. "It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I'm getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit."

Phillips has revealed he was in crippling pain from a kidney blockage that made it hard to stand at times during parts of the "Idol" season and was undergoing a series of surgeries during breaks in the competition. His right kidney wasn't functioning properly, he said, but it didn't require a transplant.

His travels to California and soon to Washington are the farthest Phillips has ever traveled from his Georgia home, he said.

The singer's best memories from "Idol" are the friendships he made, which he hadn't expected, he said. And being on stage for the first time is something he'll never forget.

"You know, I was so scared to death and, in the end, not knowing if I was going to puke before I went on stage," he said. "It was just terrifying. I get terrified every time, but that was just huge."

In Washington, Phillips will perform his hit single "Home" for an expected audience of more than 300,000 from the lawn of the U.S. Capitol before the annual fireworks. The show is broadcast live on PBS and NPR.

Phillips will join Matthew Broderick, country singer Josh Turner, "Smash" star Megan Hilty, composer John Williams, U.S. Olympic athletes and others at the concert, along with the National Symphony Orchestra.

"It's probably the biggest thing I've ever done besides 'American Idol,'" he said. "I'm just excited to get out there and do my first real live performance since everything that's been going on."

While in the nation's capital, he won't have much time to look around, but he can always come back to play tourist. Soon he'll be starting the "American Idol" tour and heading into the recording studio to turn out an album as quickly as possible.

"It's going to be a busy, busy summer," he said.

Obama, world want bold signs from Europe at G-20

CHICAGO (AP) ? With global anxiety rising, President Barack Obama is searching for bolder, swifter signals from Europe that it will contain its financial mess and keep it from torpedoing the U.S. economy and his re-election chances along with it.

Yet as he prepares for summit talks beginning Monday in Mexico with the other world leaders, Obama is down to the power of persuasion and little else.

A looming, perilous Greek election and Europe's internal politics are controlling the debate.

Given the teetering global economy and the breadth of leaders about to gather in the coastal resort of Los Cabos, the Group of 20 summit meeting carries the weight of expectations it is not likely to meet. Most of its members are not part of Europe and they have no power to drive how the continent manages its crisis, although do they come looking for signs of progress and urgency.

That clearly is the case for Obama, locked in a tight election that may be decided singlehandedly by whether U.S. job growth sinks or climbs over the next five months.

While economic challenge will dominate the summit, the agenda runs deeper.

In talks on the sidelines, Obama will confront the bloodshed in Syria and the nuclear threat in Iran. He will meet with Vladimir Putin, who has returned to the presidency of Russia. Their talks will be scrutinized, given tense U.S.-Russian political relations and deep divisions over Syria.

Obama was to head to Mexico on Sunday night after a weekend with his family in their hometown of Chicago. The summit runs Monday and Tuesday.

Europe's entangled financial crisis, from debt woes in Greece to banking trouble in Spain and high unemployment all around, has become the single biggest threat to the U.S. economic recovery. The signs of worry are clear at the White House and in the words of Obama, who can draw a straight line from the fate of Europe's economic strength to his chances of a second term.

Obama is prodding European leaders to give world markets some confidence, and fast.

"Obviously, this matters to us because Europe is our largest economic trading partner," Obama said. "If there's less demand for our products in places like Paris or Madrid, it could mean less business for manufacturers in places like Pittsburgh or Milwaukee. The good news is there is a path out of this challenge. These decisions are fundamentally in the hands of Europe's leaders."

He wants to emerge from Mexico with signs that the European players at the table, led by Germany, are moving on their own agenda. That means pursuing a banking union to match the monetary union linking the eurozone, taking steps to keep borrowing costs down in the weakest nations and injecting life into economies with growth plans involving public money.

Or in short, as Treasury Undersecretary Lael Brainard put it, the focus in Mexico will be "ensuring our European partners are escalating their response" to stabilizing a dicey situation.

"The stakes are high for all of us," she said.

The agenda threatens to be upended by the outcome of Sunday's election in Greece.

In choosing a new government for their debt-drowning nation, Greek voters are deciding whether to stick with the deeply unpopular austerity terms of an international bailout package or reject them. If they do the latter, that could lead Greece to default and get booted out of the eurozone, which could cause panic and destabilize the world's financial system.

Here, too, Obama has tried to hold sway from abroad.

"It is in everybody's interest for Greece to remain in the eurozone while respecting its commitment to reform," he said. "We recognize the sacrifices that the Greek people have made. ... But the Greek people also need to recognize that their hardships will likely be worse if they choose to exit from the eurozone."

Of the G-20 collection of emerging and economic giants, only Germany, Italy and France are in the 17-nation eurozone at the center of the crisis. European leaders point to a different summit of their own, to be held in Brussels at the end of June, as the more appropriate time to watch for action on a crisis response plan.

Given that dynamic, Obama officials have worked to keep expectations in check.

"Los Cabos will not be the final word on the eurozone," said Mike Froman, deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs.

Even beyond Europe, from Asia to the Americas, the economy is softening and fears are soaring.

The G-20 is meant to serve as the premier voice of economic coordination, representing not just traditional powers but emerging economies. Its members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union.

Obama's advisers do see the G-20 as a chance for the European nations to add some definition to their plans and show how they will put aside sovereign concerns to avoid calamity.

That pressure can help, said Matthew Goodman, who formerly oversaw the G-20 planning for Obama as director of international economics on the National Security Council staff.

"If you have to go into a meeting with peers and explain yourself, it gives the Europeans some ammunition when they have to try to sell these changes domestically," said Goodman, a specialist in political economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "They can say, 'This is what the world expects.'"

Beating Indians a huge boost: West Indies A coach

St Lucia, Jun 15, 2012 (PTI)

Pleased with the commitment shown by his team to beat India A in their last unofficial Test, West Indies A coach Hendy Springer said the fine show against a strong batting line-up has given the hosts a lot of confidence going into the third and final match here tomorrow.

Having lost the first match in Barbados against India A, West Indies A bounced back in style in the second game in Kingstown to register a convincing 125-run victory.
Stating that his team's win in the second game gives him a lot of satisfaction as Windies A are less experienced than the visitors, Springer said, "This Indian team (has a) top six who have done well at the first-class level, some of them have made triple-hundreds, so to bowl them out twice and for 94 in the second innings, is a huge boost.

"We are a much younger team, with far less experience at the first-class and international level, so every match is about learning -- learning about ourselves and learning from the opposition as well."

Chasing a target of 220, India A were bundled out for a paltry 94 as left-arm seamer Delorn Johnson (6/34) and skipper Veeraswamy Permaul (4/22) shared the spoils to help West Indies A level the three-match series 1-1.

"I am seeing improvement. I am seeing commitment. I am seeing hard work. We have a group of young men who want to do well, who are enjoying their cricket and who are giving their all," a West Indies Cricket Board release quoted Springer as saying.

"Everyone understands what is required. This positive approach, the belief in each other, is paying off. We went from a situation where a few players seemed a little intimidated going into that first match, to a place where we came to within two wickets of victory, to the present situation, where we proved to everyone that we can perform and win at this level.

"We will have that same kind of belief going into the final match on Saturday," he added. Springer also heaped praise on Johnson and Permaul.

"He (Johnson) bowled with pace and also got the ball to swing. He showed great control from over the wicket, and when he went around the wicket and got results. That match was a significant stepping stone in his development.

"The captain (Permaul) has also been doing a great job with the ball and also with the bat when required. He assessed the pitch in Kingstown very well and bowled with great control," said the coach.
