Michael Finley Hopes To Return To The NBA

Michael Finley Hopes To Return To The NBA

David Butler II-US PRESSWIRE

Earlier this week a tweet was sent to HoopsHype.com Twitter account from a savvy old veteran by the name of Michael Finley and it read like this, ?U left me off the free agency list #notdoneyet.? The tweet was sent because Finley said that he could not find his name on the wbesites list of NBA free agents. Finley then followed up on the tweet by saying that he now feels 100% healthy and is ready to return to professional basketball preferably the NBA but not ruling out overseas options as well.

The last time Finley saw any NBA action was a year and a half ago when the Boston Celtics made their Finals run, eventually losing in seven games to the Los Angeles Lakers, in which he really had no affect on the outcome because of his limited playing time due to ankle problems. Finley answered questions about the ankle saying that when he went to Boston his ankle was not 100%. Finley added that after that season with the Celtics he got his ankle worked on, and that he now feels a lot better than he did during his time in Boston.

Like every veteran wishing to return to play at the highest level Finley?s number one option is to return to an NBA team but he also noted that he would not rule out the possibility of playing overseas or even the D-League. Finley has had multiple offers from two D-League teams the Marine Red Claws, and Texas Legends but said he would feel bad about playing their because he would be taking away an opportunity from a young player to gain exposure. Finley also added that he just wishes to return to basketball and that if the right situation comes up, possibly a player-coach, that he would take the opportunity.

Finley will be going to Dallas next week to spend some time with his former teammate Dirk Nowitzki. He also shedded some light on his relationship with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban saying that he still stays in touch with Cuban, and that they are still good friends. Maybe a reunion is soon to come.

Confederates attack Union forces in Galveston

On this day in 1863, Confederate forces under Gen. J. B. Magruder began their assault on Union forces that had held Galveston since October. Magruder placed artillery and dismounted cavalry aboard two river steamers, the Bayou City and the Neptune. He also gathered infantry and cavalry, supported by artillery, to cross the railroad bridge onto the island. The Confederates entered Galveston on New Year's night, January 1, 1863, and opened fire before dawn. The Union ship Harriet Lane sank the Neptune, but the Bayou City's crew seized the Federal vessel. Union commander William B. Renshaw's flagship, the Westfield, ran aground, and the commander died trying to blow it up rather than surrender it. The other Union ships sailed out to sea, ignoring Confederate surrender demands, while their infantry comrades in town surrendered. Magruder had retaken Galveston with a moderate loss. Although the port remained under Confederate control for the rest of the war, only a week elapsed before it was again blockaded.

Israeli airstrike on Gaza kills militant (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israeli aircraft targeted Palestinian militants preparing to launch rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip early Friday, killing one militant, the military said.

Gaza's Health Ministry identified the Palestinian as 21-year-old Muaman Abu-Daf and said one other Palestinian was wounded.

The Israeli military said Abu-Daf was a senior operative in a small cell that champions the principles of global jihad. The group was responsible for laying explosives near the Gaza-Israel border and helping plan an attempted attack on the Israel-Egypt border this week, according to the military.

The targeted group also recently fired rockets at Israel, the military said.

On a Salafi-related Internet forum, two small groups inspired by the ultraconservative Islamic movement claimed affiliation with Abu-Daf, but the killed militant's family said he had been a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, affiliated with the Fatah party of West Bank-based Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Abu-Daf's body was displayed at a Gaza City mosque for Friday prayers, wrapped in a yellow Fatah flag.

Earlier this week, Israel carried out airstrikes in Gaza, targeting militants it said were involved in the attempted attack on the Israel-Egypt border.

Such Israeli air attacks have been relatively rare since the end of a three-week Israeli war against Gaza militants three years ago.

This week, the Islamic militant group Hamas marked the anniversary of the Israeli military offensive in the seaside strip.

The offensive, launched in response to months of intense rocket barrages, killed some 1,400 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians, and caused widespread damage. Thirteen Israelis also died in the fighting.

At memorial ceremonies, speakers voiced support for continued armed confrontation with Israel.

After suffering heavy losses in the fighting, Hamas has largely maintained a cease-fire with Israel. It is believed to have restocked its arsenal with more powerful weapons, smuggled in through tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border.
