Graphic Controller ArtistaGUI from Distec Connects Graphical User Interface and Touch Applications with Easy To Use Controls

Graphic controller ArtistaGUI from Distec connects graphical user interfaces and touch applications with easy to use controls

Germering (Germany) August 6, 2012 ? With ArtistaGUI, Distec GmbH ? leading German specialist for TFT-LCD flat screens and system solutions for industrial and multimedia application ? introduces a new human-machine-interface (HMI) controller that allows expansion of simple controls with TFT displays. Programming of the GUI (Graphical User Interface) is carried out with a WYSIWYG-Interface-Designer and the scripting language QT-Quick. The communication protocol is the robust and in-field proven Modbus-RTU. ?Machines and devices can be equipped with a modern graphical user interface in the course of a product modernization, but this is typically possible only with substantial modifications to the control electronics,? explained Dieter Kiermaier, Director Technical Product Marketing at Distec. ?The existing microcontrollers usually don?t have a graphical interface and a complete change of the machine?s controls is complex and costly. This is exactly where our newly developed controller for the new GUI extension applies. To equip simple machine controls with a graphical user interface and Touch without extensive redesign, we designed the ArtistaGUI graphic controller.?

ArtistaGUI is serially connected to the machine control in place by means of the widely-used Modbus-RTU-Protocol and can therefore transmit instructions and read data for the display. The control already in use may be furthermore used without any constraints. With dimensions of only 105 x 90 mm, the small and easy to implement ArtistaGUI-device supports LCD panels with resolutions of up to 800 x 600 (SVGA) with 18/24 Bit LVDS- or TTL interface. Already implemented on the assembly is a controller for 4-wire resistive touch sensors. P-Cap-touches may also be connected. Other product features include an integrated LED backlight driver, the power supply via 12 V DC as well as an SD card for the application programs. Programming is easily possible using a WYSIWYG editor and the scripting language QT Quick. Data, such as commands or measuring values, are serially exchanged between machine control and GUI by the Modbus protocol. As the service supplier, on customer request Distec offers complete design of the graphical interface as well as adaptations of the protocol to the particular application.

Ferdinand von Prondzynski, principal of Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, believes the move could undermine the Government's wider economic strategy.

In 2012/13, newer universities such as Abertay in Dundee, Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow Caledonian, Queen Margaret in Edinburgh, and Robert Gordon will all see a reduction in their share of Scotland's research budget, an annual fund of ?233 million.

Singer of US metal band released on bail in Prague

PRAGUE (AP) ? An official says the frontman of U.S. death metal band Lamb of God has been released on bail from a Prague prison, several weeks after his arrest in connection with a fan's death in 2010.

Randy Blythe, 41, was arrested June 27 and is being investigated for bodily harm resulting in death. Czech media say that during a 2010 concert in Prague an audience member climbed onto the stage and that Blythe then pushed him off. The fan reportedly hit the floor with his head and later died of the injuries.

Blythe was arrested after returning to Prague to play another gig.

Martina Lhotakova, spokeswoman for Prague's Municipal Court, says Blythe was released on $400,000 bail. That decision upholds a previous court decision which was challenged by prosecutors.

Former Mongolian president jailed, raising fears for mine program

ULAN BATOR (Reuters) - A Mongolian court has jailed former president Nambaryn Enkhbayar for four years for corruption, a move that could threaten the government's fragile coalition and increase uncertainties for foreign investors.

Resource-rich Mongolia is in the middle of a mining boom that is set to transform its tiny economy, but political uncertainties have threatened to overshadow its efforts to attract the foreign investment needed to develop mines and build vital infrastructure.

After a three-day trial, Enkhbayar was found guilty of charges that include the illegal privatization of a hotel and newspaper and the misuse of donated television equipment to broadcast from his own television station, the government said late on Thursday.

Mongolia held parliamentary elections in July and the ruling Democratic Party, which won just 31 out of 76 seats, was forced to form a coalition with Justice Coalition, which is led by Enkhbayar's Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party.

Although Enkhbayar was barred from taking part in the elections, he remains as the chairman of the MPRP, which won the third-largest block of seats in parliament.

"The Democratic Party needs the Justice Coalition ... without them, it doesn't work and the partnership may now fall apart," said Luvsandendev Sumati, director of the Sant Maral Foundation, a polling agency.

The election result has already left more than a quarter of parliament in the hands of politicians who advocate local control of mines. Investors said the latest episode could worsen the political gridlock and increase uncertainty for foreign investors.

"The most likely scenario is that the Justice Coalition will remain in the ruling coalition despite condemning the conviction," Dale Choi, an associate at Origo Partners MGL, a private equity investment company which advises investors on Mongolia, said in a note.

"The coalition parliamentarians will fight to free Chairman Enkhbayar and there may be further concessions from the Democratic Party to the Justice Coalition."

Key decisions pending for major mining projects, such as the development of the massive Tavan Tolgoi coal mine, may also be delayed.

Enkhbayar, who served as president of the landlocked central Asian country from 2005 to 2009, has called for the $13 billion Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine project with Ivanhoe Mines to be renegotiated to grant better terms to the government, and also wants to keep the coveted Tavan Tolgoi coal mine, potentially one of the world's biggest coal suppliers, in local hands.

Rio Tinto has a majority stake in Ivanhoe and has full operational control over the Oyu Tolgoi mine, which is due to start production this year.

The court also ordered Enkhbayar to pay more than 54 million tugriks ($40,000) in damages.

Enkhbayar, whom some Mongolians see as a fighter for common people, has called the charges groundless and politically motivated, according to local media reports. His lawyers said he will appeal against the sentence.
